UCCS prepared for any emergency in light of developments in ‘region’. Union of Consumer Cooperative Societies (UCCS) Chairperson Meshaal Al-Sayyar has confirmed that the union is fully prepared for any emergency in light of developments in the region, asserting all precautionary measures have been taken to maintain food security in the event of partial or all-out war in the region and that cooperative societies play pivotal and fundamental roles in any crisis, reports Al- Anba daily.

In a press statement, Al-Sayyar disclosed a communiqué was issued to cooperative societies to update them on the readiness of stores to provide basic commodities in the next six months – a measure based on the work and responsibility of the union and cooperative societies which are considered the food safety valve.

He said the relevant authorities in the State, headed by the Ministry of Commerce, are coordinating with the union to provide a warehouse to any cooperative society which does not have one for the storage of basic commodities in anticipation of any emergency.

He affirmed ample supply of food and other basic commodities. He also stressed the importance of not causing fear or panic in terms of food supply and to avoid hoarding food under the pretext of anticipating a major event. “Things are reassuring and there is no reason to panic. Basic commodities are always available,” he added.
