US President Donald Trump announced he has cancelled his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Thursday, citing "open hostility" on the part of Pyongyang.

In a letter addressed to Kim, Trump said he had hoped to carry out the June 12 US- North Korea summit in Singapore despite charged comments lobbed by both the Trump administration and North Korea officials.

Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday warned that North Korea "may end like Libya", referring to the brutal death of Muammar Gaddafi by the hands of rebels after renouncing nuclear weapons eight years earlier.

Pyongyang called Pence's remarks as "stupid" and "ignorant." "Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting," Trump wrote in a letter to Kim.

The news came as North Korea made a show of dismantling a nuclear test site, but also on the heels of some sharp words from the North Korean government about America denuclearization demands.

"You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used," Trump wrote in the letter.

However, Trump left open the possibility of arranging a new meeting with Kim.

"If you change your mind having to do with this most important summit, please do not hesitate to call me or write," the president wrote. "This missed opportunity is a truly sad moment in history."
